apple crumble

A true classic — apple crumble is essentially a delicious apple pie-style filling with raisins, topped with a buttery crumble. It’s best served warm, although it has its fans when cold too ;). A simple, quick dessert packed with apples — perfect for sharing and ideal for cosy autumn afternoons.

Ingredients for the crumble topping:

  • 200 g plain flour
  • 135 g butter, at room temperature
  • 80 g caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Place the softened butter, flour, sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl. Rub together with your fingertips until the mixture forms a crumbly texture. Set aside.

Ingredients for the apple filling:

  • 1 kg cooking apples*
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup raisins

Peel the apples, remove the cores and cut into thick slices. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.

Butter an oval baking dish (approx. 30 x 22 cm). Transfer the apple filling into the dish and level it out. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.

Bake at 175°C for 40–45 minutes, until the crumble is golden brown. The apple filling should be bubbling visibly. Remove from the oven and serve warm — ideally with vanilla ice cream or custard.

Tip: In Poland, the best apples for baking are varieties like Szara Reneta or Antonówka. In the UK, good choices include Cox or Russet apples.

Enjoy!
