Fried apple rings – thick slices of apple coated in a simple and delicious doughnut-style batter made from basic ingredients that are easy to find in any kitchen. If you have a little more time, you can make a similar version using a yeast batter, such as the one used for traditional Polish apple fritters. But for lovers of apples and apple doughnuts, these are an absolute must during carnival season! 😉 Highly recommended.
Ingredients for the batter:
- 300 g plain flour
- 2 large eggs
- 200 ml milk
- a pinch of salt
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (or vodka)
Additionally:
- 4–5 apples
- cinnamon sugar, made by mixing: 4 tablespoons caster sugar, 4 tablespoons icing sugar, 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- rapeseed oil or coconut oil, for frying
Place all the batter ingredients into a bowl and blend until smooth and fully combined. The batter should be fairly thick, smooth and free from lumps. Peel the apples and remove the cores using an apple corer. Slice into rings approximately 0.5 cm thick (do not cut them thinner, as they may break when coated in the thick batter). Dip each apple ring into the batter, coating both sides thoroughly.
Heat the oil to 175°C and fry the battered apple rings in deep fat, just as you would doughnuts, turning them occasionally until golden brown and cooked through on both sides. Transfer to kitchen paper to drain.
Once slightly cooled, roll the apple rings in the cinnamon sugar mixture twice for an even coating, then arrange on a serving platter.
Enjoy!
